Interesting Music Videos

Imagine Dragons- Radioactive
I found this video to be very interesting due to the unique way in which animation is used so sophisticatedly alongside normal, unedited footage. The concept of using children’s toys within the video intrigued me as I like the idea of hidden/deeper messages;  the soft toys are symbolic of the way in which the ‘new age’ is being bred and raised as weapons of destruction and harm by those above them. I believe this to be an example of subtle anti-war protest and a criticism of the government; a very controversial issue and therefore something which interests me so.

The Black Keys- Next Girl
This video is one of my favourites; they successfully incorporate humour into the video by way of sarcasm and micky-taking. The video itself is somewhat ‘typically different/unique’ which is what makes the words that run across the bottom so effective;  they comment on the video in dry humour and are therefore successful in keeping the viewer entertained and interested in a very unique and clever way.

  1. Imagine Dragons is an interesting music video indicating influences from cock fighting or bare knuckle fighting. It's interesting that the pink bear suggests female revenge on the sleazy crooks running the show, thus the music video ironically comments on the representation of gender and ethnicity. (All the bad guys look Mexican!)

Next Girl is an example of Goodwin's theory about voyeuristic shots of voyeuristic treatment of the female body in the repetitive images of breats and thighs. Thus Next Girl is an example of negative representation of women in the media, and spectifically in the music industry.
You could do an excellent case study on representtion of women in music videos using this as an example of unprogressive representation of women in the music industry. You could compare it with a music video where women are represented as serious artists rather than play things!

  2. Whoops: Revision to 2nd paragraph in my previous post, I mean:

Next Girl is an example of Goodwin's theory where he discusses music videos frequently include voyeruristic treatment of the female body with repetitive images of breats and thighs. Mean Girl is an example of the demeaning treatment of women in music videos.
